During this hard time, the last thing you want to deal with is the Superannuation fund, when claiming your loved ones Death Benefit Insurance. Unfortunately, these claims can often be complex when disputes arise.
A death benefit claim becomes payable if the cover was active as of the date of death and you meet the following conditions:
- Were in a close personal relationship with the deceased (e.g. a spouse or a child) or
- were financially dependent on the deceased; or
- were nominated as the beneficiary by the deceased in a super or insurance policy
Generally, you will have your claim approved by the insurer within 3 to 7 weeks of lodgement. However, if there is a contest, where someone is disputing your claim, then it could take 3 to 12 months to resolve.
