Sadly, the prevalence of PTSD continues to increase and many people are unable to return to work because of their illness. People with PTSD aren’t simply dealing with the direct depression and anxiety symptoms but many struggle with sleep problems, cardiovascular disease and obesity amongst a raft of other issues. It’s therefore imperative that where they can get support, it is given in a timely and empathetic manner that doesn’t add to their stressful situation.

Not many people are aware that TPD insurance covers people suffering from PTSD and that it plays a very important role in helping people rebuild their lives.

THE CLAIM PROCESS

Someone with PTSD that is unable to return to work will go through the same process as anyone else with an injury. So how do you make a TPD claim inside of your super fund?

    1. Contact your super fund – When starting off the claim, you must provide the necessary claim documentation to your super fund. There is also additional documentation that you may be asked to provide including identification (passport, driver’s licence etc.), medical reports and other evidence to support your claim.
    1. Submit your claim – You will need to give your signed claim statement and documentation to your assigned case manager. Your case manager will support you through this process to ensure that all of the necessary documentation is received.
    1. Your case manager will undertake an initial assessment – After the initial assessment, your case manager will determine whether you are eligible to receive a TPD benefit. They will generally contact your employer too and ask for a written statement as to why you ended your employment.
    1. Your insurance provider will assess your claim – Your insurer will assess the supporting documentation that you submitted earlier in the process. They may also request further evidence. This includes doctors reports, written statements by you or your employer or medical examination from an independent medical professional.
  1. Your insurer will make a determination – they will either accept, deny or defer your claim. If they defer, this is to do further assessment on the full extent of your disability and its permanency.

MOVING ON WITH LIFE

Being able to successfully access TPD insurance can mean the difference in being able to afford ongoing help or not. The financial strain is a big issue for anyone who is unable to return to work (sometimes even if they have a Workcover claim) so being able to access funds so you can meet your expenses is a crucial step. If you can’t even cover your living expenses most people will struggle to get the help they need to manage their symptoms.

With PTSD there are three broad categories of treaTment:

    • Psychological treatment that may include therapies
    • Physical treatments like medication.
    • Mindfullness, exercise and self-help.

Without access to these options it is incredibly difficult for a sufferer of PTSD to manage their symptoms. We aim to use our best endeavours to help sufferers unlock these options so they can get on with life.
